As part of WOW's celebrations for International Day of the Girl, two of our Young Leaders Directory alumnae were invited to Canada House for their Ambassador for a Day programme with High Commissioner Ralph Goodale and Deputy High Commissioner Robert Fry. Mofiyin Onanuga and Sima Mangal spent a full day at the High Commission, attending meetings and witnessing first hand what the world of diplomacy involves. They also met with senior women diplomats posted in London and spoke with the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

Both young women were part of WOW's 2021 Young Leaders Directory. Mofiyin is a 20-year-old CEO, educator, and STEMinist. She is the founder of Ominira Learning and the sole Youth Advisor for Girl Up UK. She aims to combine the power of storytelling with the powers of STEM with the intention of connecting and empowering individuals everywhere. Sima studies History & Politics at the University of Warwick and is a member of The Advocacy Academy through which she helped to launch the ICFREE group. She advocates for the Black and Brown ethnic groups and has aspirations for a career in International Relations.

Mofiyin said, "The most meaningful part of the day was the roundtable with women in senior leadership roles. We had real honest conversations about being a woman in the diplomatic space, from having children, to having partners and moving around the world, and how that affects you as a young person and I really appreciated the vulnerability of all of the women. We also had other discussions, such as what it's like to be a woman of colour in diplomatic roles and how it's difficult and must think about your safety. I didn't expect for the women to be so honest but I really and truly appreciated it and I knew that I was getting real advice and real experiences from real women."

Sima said, "I feel like it gave me a lot of clarity on what I want to do future-wise. I was sort of in this place where I didn't know what I wanted to do and how to go about getting into my career pathway, and so it gave me a lot of clarity They went above and beyond to cater for me."

Thank you to Canada House for offering our Young Leaders this opportunity.
