My Journey as an Activist: From Survivor to Advocate

By Nada Al-Ahdal, Young Leaders Directory 2021, Yemen

My name is Nada Al-Ahdal and I’m from Yemen. My journey into activism began from a place of deep personal pain and trauma. At a very young age, I was thrust into a situation that no child should ever face , a child marriage at the age of 11. But rather than allow this experience to define me, I chose to fight back, not just for myself, but for all the girls who have suffered and are still suffering around the world.

How I Became an Activist

My activism began when I escaped from a child marriage at the age of 11. Driven by the injustice I had witnessed and endured, I made a video to share my story. What started as a personal cry for help quickly turned into a global movement when the video went viral, amassing millions of views in just a few days. This overwhelming response empowered me to continue speaking out against child marriage and to advocate for the rights of girls and women everywhere.

Being a WOW Young Leader

Becoming a WOW Young Leader was one of the most empowering experiences of my life. It provided me with a platform to amplify my voice and connect with other young activists who are just as passionate about creating change. The most enjoyable part of being a WOW Young Leader was the sense of community and support. I found myself surrounded by like-minded individuals who not only understood my struggles but were also eager to stand alongside me in the fight for justice.

Proudest Achievements

One of my proudest achievements is the role I played in pushing for the criminalising of child marriage in the Yemeni constitution. Knowing that my story and my voice contributed to a significant legal change that will protect future generations of girls from the horrors of child marriage is something that fills me with immense pride and gratitude.

A Vision for a Better World

The change I would most like to see in the world is the eradication of child marriage and gender-based violence. Every girl deserves the right to live her life free from fear, to pursue her education, and to reach her full potential. I believe that by continuing to raise awareness and push for legal reforms, we can create a world where no girl is forced into marriage against her will.

Advice for Aspiring Activists

To any young person looking to become an activist or a young leader, my advice is simple: never underestimate the power of your voice. Even if you feel small or unheard, remember that your story and your passion can ignite change. Start by speaking up in your community, sharing your experiences, and connecting with others who share your vision. Activism isn’t just about grand gestures; it’s about the small, everyday actions that, together, can transform the world.
