Remember, every small action counts

By Afsana Ahmadi, Young Leaders Directory 2023, Afghanistan

I am Afsana Ahmadi, a passionate advocate for girls' education, especially in Afghanistan, where I was born and raised. My journey as an activist began when I joined the Afghan Girls Robotics Team, which provided me with a platform to showcase the potential of Afghan girls despite the challenging circumstances in our country. Witnessing the determination and resilience of my peers in the face of adversity inspired me to take on a more active role in advocating for education and gender equality. As I traveled, competed, and met other young leaders, I realized that my voice could amplify the struggles and dreams of millions of girls who are denied the right to learn.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a WOW Young Leader was the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals from around the world who share a common goal of making a positive impact. The platform allowed me to collaborate, learn, and grow with other passionate young leaders. I enjoyed the exchange of ideas, the diversity of perspectives, and the collective energy that comes from working together towards meaningful change. Being part of this community has reinforced my belief that young people have the power to drive global change.

One of my biggest achievements is participating in the United Nations Conference in Doha, Qatar, where I had the opportunity to raise my voice about the plight of Afghan girls, in a situation that the Taliban has restricted girls from going to school and university. I'm proud of my continued work in advocating for girls' education, which has involved speaking at international forums and engaging with policymakers to highlight the urgent need for educational opportunities for all girls specially regardless of their backgrounds.

I believe that education is the foundation for a better world, and I would like to see a global commitment to ensuring that every child, especially girls in conflict-affected areas like my country Afghanistan has access to quality education. This means not only building schools and providing resources but also creating safe environments where girls can learn without fear. I also want to see a greater emphasis on technology and innovation in education, so that all students, regardless of where they live, can have the tools they need to succeed in the 21st century.

My advice to other young people who aspire to become leaders or activists is to start where you are, with what you have. You don't need to wait for the perfect opportunity or platform to make a difference. Begin by addressing issues that matter to you and your community, and don't be afraid to speak out and take action. Surround yourself with supportive and like-minded individuals who can help you grow, and always stay true to your values. Remember, every small action counts, and collectively, we can create a ripple effect that leads to significant change.
