Sofia Tsourinaki

Sophia Tsourinaki is an ancient textile technologist and weaver specializing in the archaeology of textile production, with a particular focus on experimental archaeology, combining weaving expertise with the theoretical analysis of textiles and tools.

She studied Weaving and Three-Dimensional Design at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and the Textile Art Center. She specialised in the study of archaeological textiles at the Musée Historique des Tissus in Lyon. She has worked as a scientific advisor to the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Silk, the Archaeological Museum of Thebes, and the Museum of Modern Greek Culture. From 1986 to 2023, she taught Weaving, Dyeing, Materials Technology, and the History of Textiles at educational institutions and at the SEN Historical Textile Workshop.

Since 2014, she has organised Experimental Archaeology projects focusing on the analysis and use of ancient textile tools. Since 2017, she has served on the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Institute of Egyptology. From 2018 to 2023, she studied the dyeing workshop and textile tools of Hellenistic Helike. She has presented her research at numerous conferences and has published extensively in academic journals and publications.
